How Water Mist Fire Suppression Systems Work
Fire Suppression with Minimal Water Usage
Mist systems are water-based, just like a sprinkler. Conventional sprinkler systems, however, pump out 60 litres of water per minute whereas the SmartMist system only uses 12 litres per minute with the same level of effectiveness. The mitigating factor is the size of the water droplet.
Sprinkler systems use much bigger droplets of water which means a proportionally smaller reaction surface. The smaller droplets of water delivered by the high pressure SmartMist system mean a proportionally greater reaction surface and a more efficient absorption of heat.
What this means in effect is a fire suppression system which is just as effective as a fire sprinkler but with much less water usage and therefore – as it’s not a deluge-type system – much less water damage as well. SmartMist Fire Ltd offers the key benefits of water mist fire suppression such as reduced water damage, greater efficiency, and eco-friendly protection.
How the Water Supply Works
- Where the mains water supply only connects to the SmartMist system, the flow rate for the water-mist nozzles should be in line with recommendations contained in 6.6 of BS 8458:2015.
- Where the mains supply connects the water-mist system and the domestic / residential occupancy supply, the water-mist system should be capable of providing flow rates at the water-mist nozzles in line with recommendations in 6.6 of the BS 8458:2015 publication via:
- operation of an automatic priority demand valve, or
- for domestic occupancies, the flow rate recommended in 6.6.1 plus at least 25 L/min
- for residential occupancies, the flow rate recommended in 6.6.2 plus at least 50 L/min
